Far Left: The HC Parrott wagon company, by Henry Charles Parrott (1794-1877) of this family.
Left: Eugene Lee Parrott (1925-2022), Professor of Pharmaceutics who wrote one of the defining textbooks on the topic.

  • This is a reasonably small family, despite having been in the US for 200 years. It originated in Surrey, England, though there might be connections to Yorkshire. Most of its descendants are in Wisconsin and the Dakotas. Family lore is that there were additional children who moved to Iowa and Minnesota, so there might be additional family branches waiting to be discovered.

He practiced medicine for six years at Michem Surry, but, ignoring the lifestyle of his peers, disgraced himself by falling in love with the gardener's daughter, whom he married aboard ship as they left for America."

General Notes: BRIGGSVILLE-Thelma M. Gay, age 98, of Briggsville, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, Feb. 14, at Tivoli in Portage.

Thelma was born in February 1923, on the family farm in rural Marquette county on what her father always told her was the coldest, stormiest day he could ever remember. She was the daughter of Alfred and Marion (Brancel) Parrott. Thelma was raised on that farm with her very lively and fun-loving brothers and sisters. Oh what stories they all told!

Thelma started college at a young age, but in 1942 she and Elwyn Gay, her fiancé, decided they were too lonely apart when Thelma was away at college, so they married and started their life together. She was an active member of her church, the Rebecca Lodge, and Homemakers Club. Throughout the following years she helped her girls with many 4-H projects and numerous school activities. While still raising her four daughters and helping on the farm, Thelma went back to college to finish her degree. To help pay for her daughter's college degrees, she then started teaching in the Portage School District, where she taught for over 20 years.

Upon retirement, Thelma and Elwyn liked to travel and became "snow birds" in the southwest. Here Thelma enjoyed hiking in the deserts and mountains, visiting with family and friends, and participating in the many classes and activities offered in their community. Always very artistic, and with a great love for music and art, it was here that Thelma started oil painting. Her pictures are still being enjoyed today by numerous family members and friends.

Thelma was an incredible woman - loving, kind, dignified and elegant. She is survived by her children, Jeanette Backhaus, Wisconsin Dells, Dorothy (Dan) Ferguson, Clinton Township, Mich., Peg (Gene) Hamele, Fort Atkinson, and Sue (Jim) Meilahn, Placitas, N.M.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Nellie; her husband, Elwyn; her son-in-law, Tom Backhaus; and her seven siblings.

Memorial services will be at a later date at Briggsville United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Briggsville Protestant Cemetery. The Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage (www.pmmfh.com) is assisting the family.

Couple finds fun, love and family on snowmobile trail
    Snowmobiling keeps Parrotts young, active
    By Kristin Gilpatrick

BRIGGSVILLE-- While most people grumbe and groan when the snow flies thick and the temperature drops, Edward and Patricia Parrott of rural Briggsville can't wait for a good, foot-deep blizzard. As soon as the snow gets deep enough, the Parrotts fly out the door, rev up their engines and blast through the white powder on their high powered snowmobiles.

"Snowmobiling is a free riding feeling and, like a motorcycle ride, it's a real thrill. It's hard to explain, you've just got to try it once and you'll be out buying your own snowmobile in no time," Mr. Parrott said. The Parrotts bought their first snowmobiles five years ago after a ride got them hooked on the sport. It's a winter tradition the Parrotts, their six children and their grandchildren, have shared together since.

"Our whole family goes snowmobiing. We love to go up north to my daughter's house or my sister's house in in (sic) Hayward and branch out from there. It's fun, and it keeps you active in the winter," said Mrs. Parrott who works as the director for the Columbia County Health Department in Portage. "We spend the whole day on the snowmobile and you never get tired of it. With the clothing and helmets they have, you rarely get cold. It's a fun, exciting, beautiful experience to ride through the beauty of snow covered woods in Wisconsin," said Mr. Parrott, a retired vice president of American International.

"You see a whle different, quieter, more peaceful nature from a snowmobile than you do from your car. A snowmobile allows you to go to place you can't get to in the summer... like frozen marshes, or in a car at any time. It's just beautiful," he added.

The snowmobiling pari said they prefer the quiet of the trails right around Briggsville and in the north central and northwestern Wisconsin to the snowmobile-mecca activity in northeastern areas such as Eagle River and Minoqua. "Those places are a little too busy for us, but there are thousands of trails statewide and every county puts out a map of trails and marks the trils with little orange triangles, so all you need is a map, a snowmobile and some common sense to have a safe, fun winter time," Mr Parrott said.
Together they've gone thousands of miles, up to 150 miles a day in all kinds of weather. "You've got hand warmer and all types of clothing to keep you warm, so I never get cold," Mrs. Parrott said.

Snowmobiling is not only a good way to stay active, it's a good way to stay in shape "provided you don't stop off for too may fish fries at places along the trail," Mr. Parrott said. "You may think you're just sitting there and the machine is doing all the work, but you the driver really use your whole boty. You're leaning and twisting ... and you can really feel it in your arms. It's good exercise," he said.

But the best part of snowmobiling is the people who do it, the Parrotts both said. "People who are snowmobiling are friendly and quite gregarious. Just like there's a wide variety of snowmobiles there's a wide variety of rides, but we've found virtually every rider to be friendly, helpful and fun loving. We've made a lot of friends and had a lot of fun snowmobiling," Mr. Parrott said.

And despite the news stories, both Parrotts saaid snowmobiling is as safe as any other sport, provided snowmobilers use their heads and use their heads and go at reasonable speeds. "If you do something stupid, you're going to get banged up and there's no reason to go real fast. You get the same thrill of riding at 50 as you do at 100 miles per hou and at slower speeds you can actually see the beauty around you,' He added.

Edward next married Patricia Ann Becker. Patricia was born on 25 Mar 1935 in Bridgewater Township, Rice Co., Minnesota and died on 23 Apr 2023 in Portage, Columbia Co., Wisconsin, at age 88.

    52. Eldon Frederick Parrott (Alfred Henry4, Arthur Henry3, Henry Hodgson (Dr.)2, Henry Charles1) was born on 2 Jan 1925 in Marquette Co., Wisconsin and died on 16 Mar 2017 in Portage, Columbia Co., Wisconsin, at age 92.

General Notes: Eldon Frederick Parrott, 92, of Portage, died May 16, 2017, from complications of Parkinson's disease.

He was born on the family farm near Endeavor on Jan. 2, 1925, to Alfred Henry Parrott and Marion Francis (Brancel) Parrott.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Nellie (Doughty) Parrott; and by siblings and in-laws, Edith (Owen Owens), Edward, Elwyn Gay, Dorothy (who died in infancy), James, Grace (William Schultz), and Francis. He is survived by his sister, Thelma Gay (his much-loved sister who was the other redhead in an otherwise dark-haired family); and in-laws, Pat Parrott, Katie Parrott and June Parrott. He is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.

He and his siblings were quite a team (swimming and fishing in the Neenah Creek, exploring the land they all grew to love, hunting, singing together, story-telling, competing and working). They spent as much time as possible together as adults, gathering for campfires, Sunday dinners, and the annual family picnic, a tradition now about 100 years old.

Eldon began college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison after graduating from Endeavor High School with the hope of becoming a doctor. But it was necessary to return to farming after less than one semester due to WWII. He would not have a chance to return to college until his mid-30s.

On Nov. 18, 1944, Eldon married Marlys Gasch. They met at Endeavor High School, where she was a new teacher and he a recent graduate. Together they had five children: Patricia (Douglas) Cook, Linda (Ryan) Haywood, Brian (Karen Halfmann) Parrott, Diane (Vance Hoskins) Parrott-Hoskins, and Bruce (Karen) Cook-Parrott. Brian preceded him in death due to melanoma in 2007.

He is survived by 11 grandchildren from his marriage to Marlys: John (Sheeba) Cook, Elizabeth (Shenyeh) Cook-Shen, Mike Cook (Rhonda Berg), Colin Haywood, Evan Haywood, Kameko Halfmann (Jake Kurczek), Keegan Parrott, Danielle (Anthony LaJoye) Hoskins-LaJoye, Michael Hoskins, Marlee Cook-Parrott, and Sam Cook-Parrott, plus four great-grandchildren, Cassius Cook, Gideon Cook, David Hoskins Oshinski, and Aedan Cook-Shen. He was preceded in death by grandson, Brendan Haywood. He often said that when he looked at his grandchildren, he was confident that the future was in good hands.

Marlys and Eldon worked hard farming and providing for their family. Both were involved in many community activities, including school board, 4-H, the Adams-Marquette Electric Cooperative, Odd Fellows/Rebekahs, as well as in leadership roles in the Briggsville United Methodist Church.

Eldon never lost his dream to attend college and in his mid-30s, he began attending the School of Commerce at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He finished four years of college in three years; he was elected to two honors fraternities. One of his proudest moments was when he received the Alfred P. Sloan scholastic scholarship.

Upon graduation in 1961, the family moved to Michigan to begin his second career as product planning analyst for Ford Motor Company's Tractor Division. His lifelong affinity for detail and numbers was put to work while keeping him close to the world of farming. His years in Michigan were spent developing his career, with Marlys teaching mostly math classes at the high school. They were active in the St. Paul United Methodist Church, where Eldon spent years as church treasurer.

In 1978, Marlys was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a disease she died from on Aug. 1, 1980. Eldon cared for her during her illness with a devotion and love that remains an example for all of us. Eldon felt a great attachment to Marlys' brothers and their spouses, as well as to their many nieces and nephews.

On April 3, 1982, Eldon married Beverly Powers Koeber, whom he met at church. Through this union he gained three stepchildren: Scott (Lois) Koeber, Maribeth (Steve) Constantine, Brett (Sandy Thompson) Koeber, and another 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Eldon and Beverly retired while in their 50s, and enjoyed traveling to at least 17 different countries. They wintered in Florida for over 30 years where they were active in the Swiss Village neighborhood. Eldon was in charge of the Winter Haven AARP income tax operation for many years. He loved doing taxes and, ever competitive, was proud when he took the tax preparer's exam at age 80, scoring 100 percent.

In 1992, Eldon and Beverly moved to rural Wisconsin. Eldon is survived by Beverly.

Eldon moved to Tivoli Assisted Living in 2014, one year after Bev. He devoted his days to spending time with her and being her advocate. Special thanks to Karolyn and Kari, and the staff at Tivoli, for their loving care.

Eldon taught us many lessons in life. He was devoted to family, community and church. He was gentle, trustworthy, solid, direct, independent, a good friend, a good worker, full of pride, and caring for all people. He epitomized the word integrity. He was also determined, some might even say stubborn! He LOVED his pie and ice cream and when asked his favorite pie, he would respond, "pie." He also could not pass up a dish of beans.

He taught us to stand up straight, to possess a firm handshake, to try harder when we failed, to think for ourselves, and to work hard. He was a wise man and we will miss him.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. June 25 at Briggsville United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors at noon. The service will be followed by a reception/luncheon at the church.

For those wishing to make memorial donations, the family is grateful and suggests: Tivoli Assisted Living, 2805 Hunter's Trail, Portage, WI 53901, or Briggsville United Methodist Church, W8608 State Rd. 23, Briggsville, WI 53920.

    85. James Everett Parrott (Wayne Everett5, Clarence Hodgson4, Alfred O.3, Henry Hodgson (Dr.)2, Henry Charles1) was born on 4 Aug 1953 in Portage, Columbia Co., Wisconsin and died on 14 May 2024 in Snellville, Gwinnett Co., Georgia, at age 70.

    General Notes: August 4, 1953-May 14, 2004

James ("Jim") Everett Parrott, 70, of Snellville, Georgia, passed away on May 14, 2024. Jim was born on August 4, 1953 to Wayne and Margaret Parrott in Portage, Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his children, Jennifer (Matthew) and Kate; his grandson, Beckett; and his siblings, Kathy Paullin and Jeff Parrott.

A loving and devoted husband of 50 years, Jim first met Elizabeth in the summer of 1972, catching her attention with his easygoing personality and playful sense of humor. The two wed a couple of years thereafter and later welcomed their daughters. Jim was a doting father who adored his children, and later his grandson. Known as hardworking and loyal, Jim prioritized providing for his family and put their wellbeing above all else.

Spending summers on his aunt Emma's farm, Jim developed a passion for nature and wildlife at a young age and appreciated spending time outdoors. His kindness and compassion toward animals and all living things endeared him to others, and he passed these values onto his children and grandson. Caring and generous, Jim was eager to lend a helping hand to family, friends and neighbors, and he was grateful for those who did the same.

Jim was a craftsman in his own right, and over the years dabbled in everything from painting and metalworking to mechanics and woodworking. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, grilling, all things National Geographic and various creative projects, but what he loved most was spending time with his family and friends, whether that meant sharing a meal, visiting the botanical gardens or simply relaxing together on a weekend afternoon.

While Jim's full, colorful life ended far too soon, his kind, warmhearted spirit will shine through the many people who loved him and every life he touched for years to come.

A service will be held at Suwanee Family Life Church (1414 Park Commons Square, Suwanee, GA 30024) on June 1, 2024 from 911 a.m. to honor Jim's memory. He will be buried near his parents in Westfield, Wisconsin.

General Notes: Some had no way to counter attack

REEDSPORT - As the Japanese planes swept in, reaction among the sailors on American ships ranged from disbelief to terror. The same men who had spent Saturday night playing penny-ante poker were now shuffled by fate into the living -- and the dead.

"They were picking on secondary targets such as us," recaalled Arlo Lee Parrott of Reedsport. Parrott served 14 years in the military, retiring in 1954 from the Air Force following service in he Korean War. But on that sleepy, sunny Sunday morning, he was "a 19-year old boy" who would age considerably in the next two hours.

Parrott was serving his first hitch as a deck crewman Seaman on the destroyer tender USS Rige, anchored for refitting at the 10-10 docks just across the battleship row.

"We had an oil tanker anchored right behind us and they dropped a bomb between our stern and their bow," continued Parrott, his eyes gazing into memory. "We got 158 shrapnel holes, as well as a couple of injured men. Then they dropped another bomb off our bow, but is didn't go off...it would have killed us all.

"It hit within 10 yards of the ship; we could hear the splash."

Around the Rigel, the scene could have come from Hell. Explosions rocked the battleships, amidst flames, smoke, gunfire, and the cries of the wounded. At the height of the battle, as the Japanese planes methodically dropped their bombs and strafed their victims, chaos reigned among the Americans. Often without guns, ammunition, or direction, men did what they could on their own - with heroism almost commonplace.

"The machine guns were spraying the docks," said Parrott. "And I was on deck watching it all. Well I said that, 'This is no place for me,' but a cople of those yard workers were out on the dock and had been hit. As I watched our commanding officer, an officer who was also a doctor, went onto the dock and was trying to help the injured workers.

"As those machine gun bullets hit, well I had never seen a fat man move so fast in all of my life. He finally made a mad dive and got under a railroad car."

No way to counter the attack In the attack, 70 civilians - including yard workers on-site that morning - were killed.

Concentrating with deadly precision on the stationary, huge battleships, the Japanese scored with stunning accuracy, as the men of the Rigel could only watch.

"I watched the Arizona go down, and then watched the Oklahoma roll rover," said Parrott quietly. "we didn't have any guns to shoot with. I got up to deck to see what was going on and saw the Arizona really get it. There was explosions, smoke, and confusion all over - and the oil was just pouring out of her hull."

The Arizona received the most deadly blow of the entire fleet, losing 1,103 of its 1,400 man crew. The Oklahoma was also a total loss, although its capsized hull was to remain afloat long enough to evacuate some sailors days later. In all the Navy lost 2,000, with 710 wounded in the two-hour attack. The Army and Marine Corps sufferred 327 casualties, with 433 wounded.

But the loss of life didn't stop only with the Americans, the Japanese also lost some lives - although in paltry numbers compared to the American toll.

"I saw one Japanese plane cut in half over Ford Island by the anti-aircraft fire," said Parrott. "They got lucky with a five-inch .50 caliber I guess. And I saw antoher one go down by the submarine base." In all the Japanese lost 20 warplanes and their crew.

Parrott has already received notice that he will receive the special 50th anniversary medal commemorating the attack, as well as a letter of congratultions from Sen. Mark Hatfield, thanking him for his service to his country - service that Parrott is fiercely proud of.

"If I could go again I would go," he declared. "I wasa at Pearl Harbor the day that it got started, and at Okinawa on the day that it ended. My only regret is that they didn't let us invade the Japanese mainland - and we were loaded and ready to go.

"I wanted the fleet to go and pound those people down into the ground so that they would never rise again - sink their rising sun," he growled, and for a moment anger clouded his features. But the cloud passes, the memory fades, and once again he becomes a quiet, 69-year old man reliving memories.

"I think that getting this medal is a fine thing, even though it's 50 years late," he reflects. "I'll still be glad to get it."

Following his discharge from the Air Force in 1954 Parrott settled in the Bay Area, but has lived in the Reedsport/Winchester Bay since 1982. He retired from Weyerhaeuser's plywood plant since in 1984, and presently lives and cares for his 85-year old mother, Goldie Parrott.
